Tri Hita Karana: the Balinese idea behind Eywa Retreat
Harmony with nature, with people and with the spiritual
Tri Hita Karana is an ancestral Balinese philosophy. The words mean, roughly, the three causes of well-being, and the idea is simple: a good life comes from harmony between the spiritual world, the human world and the natural world. You can see it across Bali, in the temples, in the way villages share the work of the rice fields, and in the care given to the land.
At Eywa Retreat, Tri Hita Karana is our starting point, and we sum it up in two words: connect, coexist.
Palemahan: harmony with nature
Fourteen lumbungs, the traditional Balinese granaries, held within lush tropical gardens, built with natural materials and open to the land. The garden is not a backdrop: paths, flowers and the tree of life run through the whole estate.
Pawongan: harmony with people
Harmony between people is about gathering. At Eywa that happens at Orama, our restaurant, at Akaré, our botanical elixir bar, and in the celebrations that can fill the whole estate, from weddings to retreats.
Parahyangan: harmony with the spiritual
Yoga, meditation, breathwork and sound healing, to restore balance, energy and inner calm. We hold weekly group sessions of meditation, breathwork and sound healing, and private yoga, tai chi, reiki and meditation on request. Sessions take place in the garden, under the tree of life, a few steps from your lumbung.
Living it during your stay
You do not need to know the philosophy to feel it. It is in a morning in the garden, a session under the tree of life, a botanical elixir at Akaré and dinner shared at Orama, and the quiet of your own private pool at the end of the day.
