What is a lumbung? Staying in a Balinese granary with a private pool
Fourteen lumbungs in a tropical garden in Uluwatu
If you have travelled in Bali, you may have noticed small timber buildings with a tall, curved roof standing among the rice fields. These are lumbungs, the traditional granaries where families once stored their rice. At Eywa Retreat, we have reimagined the lumbung as a place to stay.
A granary, reimagined
Each lumbung at Eywa keeps the shape of the original: timber, a curved roof and natural materials. Inside, the space is arranged on two levels, with a living room below and a bedroom above. Around it, the tropical garden.
What makes it a stay rather than a museum piece is the comfort: air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a smart TV, a coffee maker, a mini bar and fridge, complimentary bottled water, a safe, a hair dryer, a walk-in shower, toiletries and slippers. Each lumbung has its own private entrance, and all of them are non-smoking.
Every lumbung has its own private pool
There are fourteen lumbungs at Eywa, and each one has its own private pool. Most are intimate plunge pools, and some lumbungs open onto a longer pool, with sun loungers beside the water.
Every lumbung is unique, and pool sizes and layouts vary from one to another, so the photos show the character of each one. Specific pool sizes and layouts are not guaranteed.
